Possibilities such as storms, hurricanes, earthquakes, flooding, tornadoes or human mistakes can happen anywhere at anytime. If you are connected to the power grid then you could be at risk should such a catastrophe occur. It only takes one time of being without electrical power to realize just how inconvenient life can become. Loss of food, heat, water and communications are all potentially life threatening situations if power is not restored in a reasonable amount of time. In times such as these every self-sufficient household needs a reliable source of backup power that will restore comfort and give peace of mind. Self-sufficiency begins with preparations for any unexpected event that may occur.

Self-sufficiency Through Sustainable Resources

The objective of personal and community development is to become more self-sufficient through several different resources and systems to supply what we need.

We are more self-sufficient when we develop strong local communities with extensive connections. Working with others that want to achieve the same goals will encourage us to cultivate more control over how our needs are met by doing things for ourselves.

Self-sufficiency and what it means

Having access to at least two different water sources would certainly make us more self-sufficient. If the electrical power should ever go out, a convenient hand pump on a water well would give you access to clean water. Barrels that collect rain water are another source for water with the exception of needing a filter to clean the contaminates. With the proper water filter, just about any source of water can be made drinkable.

Self-sufficiency can also be obtained by growing some of your own food. By having a garden, the quality of your food is enhanced and by not needing the grocery store as much, you become much more self-reliant. Community supported coops are a great way to support more local farmers and increases our availability to organic foods and increased growing skills. Local farmers markets are another way to support the local community towards a more sustainable way of living.

Alternatives to oil and gas such as solar panels and a wood stove are also great sources of becoming more self-sufficient. Wind turbines can also prove to be an excellent source of generated power. Alternative energy resources are always a means to becoming more self-reliant.

From a personal perspective as well as your local community efforts, self-sufficiency is a way to simplify life and guarantee stability in a world seemingly gone mad. Preparedness is no longer just for the conspiracy theorists but for those wanting a secure and viable future from which to prosper. Through individual as well as community effort our world can become sustainable for those who take the initiative to prepare.

Rod and Lauretta Smith estimate they could survive a year without going to the grocery store.

A large garden on their 5-acre property in south Tulsa produces hundreds of quarts of canned and frozen beans, tomatoes and other vegetables. Chickens provide eggs.

The Smiths are among a small but growing number of people stocking up on food to become more self-reliant in a time marked by natural disasters and economic uncertainty.

“We’re living in what is at best a tenuous economy,” Rod Smith said. “There’s a sense that as a country, things could turn overnight economically…. People are beginning to realize we’ve got to be ready to help not only ourselves, but also our neighbors.”

Lauretta Smith said wherever she goes, she hears people talking about gardening and raising chickens.

“They’re asking us questions about how to garden and how to can,” she said.

Rod Smith, an Assemblies of God pastor on leave from his last church, sees a spiritual element in preparing for tough times.

Cooking without electricity or fuel

Heaven forbid but what if the scenario of not having any electricity should occur? We have all faced temporary power outages but fortunately, our power is usually back on within a matter of minutes or hours. We depend so much on electricity for everything and forget just how inconvenient it can be to be faced with no power. If you’re like me, you have emergency back up maybe for a few days but what happens if those few days should turn into months? Nasa has stated that with increased activity from our sun that a possible CME could be large enough to take down our electrical grid. Electricity runs everything that makes our lifestyles convenient and not having it would be a disaster for most.

There’s many preparations for such a scenario but today I want to talk about solar ovens. Our largest fuel source comes from the sun so why not harness that to cook as well. It’s free energy put to good use and actually makes cooking of foods easy. How convenient not to have to rely on gas or electricity to cook our meals. As long as the sun is shining there is an unlimited source of power. Foods can be cooked various ways such as boiled, steamed, roasted or baked at temperatures of 360 degrees making it ideal for cooking in times of emergency or just to save on energy. For developing countries solar oven are widely used as a source of cooking. With fuel and electricity scarce this offers an alternative to the traditional methods. Here in the United States, solar ovens are used predominately as a camping resource for cooking.

How do solar ovens work?

How the solar ovens work is a simple concept that works by focusing sunlight on a certain spot. The concentrated sunlight is more than capable of cooking or boiling water. Generally, there are three different kinds of solar ovens; panel cookers, box ovens, and curved concentrator ovens. The least expensive are the panel cookers that use reflective panels to direct the sunlight to a cooking bowl that is enclosed in a clear plastic bag. These can be easily handmade using old cardboard boxes and aluminum foil. The clear plastic bag keeps the warm air close to the bowl and the aluminum foil reflects the heat onto the bowl. The box oven is a simple box styled cooker with either a dark or reflective interior. The sides are insulated to keep the heat in and the inside is reflective so to direct the sun at the pot inside of the box. The dark interior absorbs heat and radiates it back to the pot. Foods take longer to cook with temperatures usually reaching 300oF. A curved concentrated solar oven is the faster method of solar cooking. Most designs are a parabolic bowl shape that has large reflectors or mirrors that direct the sunlight to a pot. However, unlike other solar ovens, you have to move the curved concentrator to follow the suns movement.

Global Sun Oven

Global Sun Oven is different than most box ovens in that they have many features not included in other solar ovens. Top quality materials guarantee maximum use of the suns energy and increased temperatures for faster cooking. Portable, collapsible, and maintenance free make this solar oven a favorite. Some of the more notable features include:

Not only do you have fresh eggs from laying hens but you can also have fresh chicken for butchering. Chickens are very easy to care for needing only a small amount of food, clean water and coop with ranging area for roaming. Ideally, most chicken coop’s would have nesting boxes, a roosting platform and a fenced in area for free range roaming. A smaller compact chicken coop is preferred when only raising a few chickens so that the coop is easily moved to a new ground area when needed. Wood shavings are a common floor covering and straw or hay is used within the nesting boxes. Periodic cleaning of these areas is a must to keep chickens free of lice and mites. It is recommended that chickens be checked often for the condition of mites. Diatomaceous earth is a natural garden pest control agent that also helps in preventing and controlling mites on chickens.

Easy chicken coop plans can be found here: Easy Chicken Coop Plans

If raising chicks they are started on a high protein chick starter food for several weeks then switched to a less protein chick starter for several more weeks. Around four months of age, the chickens can be fed mash or crumbles and other food scraps. Chicken scratch can be added but it is not recommended as a main source of food. Crushed eggs shells or oyster shells give them added calcium that assists in egg production.

Depending on where you live, you need to consider protection from the cold freezes of winter. Many wrap their coops in heavy plastic or install small heaters to keep the coop warm enough. Protection from any severe weather that may occur is to be considered.

Daylight hours are necessary for adequate egg production so if the daylight time drops a light bulb can be added to maintain your egg production. A regular feeding schedule as well as plenty of room to roam will give you stress free chickens that lay plenty of eggs.

Finding a chicken coop is not usually difficult. Contact either your local agricultural department or feed stores to inquire about local woodworkers available for hire or just use your online local Craig’s List and search in the garden section. If you are handy with building projects and this is a very simple project, then you can get uncomplicated layout plans for building your own chicken coop here:

World markets experienced dramatic losses and rebounds last week as investors watched economic developments in Greece with growing anxiety. The jitters come after weeks of gathering turmoil in the Eurozone, starting earlier this month when credit rating agency Moody’s Investors Service downgraded Greek debt to CAA1 and indicated a 50% chance that the country would default on its bonds. Just two weeks ago, Standard and Poor responded by downgrading Greek debt to CCC, giving it the lowest credit rating for any country in the world.

One fear is that the contagion of a Greek default would spread throughout the Eurozone, causing borrowing rates for other fragile European economies in Ireland and Portugal to skyrocket. A Portugal default would be a massive hit to the Spanish banking system, which has the largest exposure to Portuguese debt in the Eurozone. Now Moody’s has threatened to downgrade the credit worthiness of some of the largest Italian banks, and has put the Italian public debt on review for downgrade.

The EU and the IMF have scrambled to throw together a second massive bailout for the tiny Greek nation, this one expected to be worth 120 billion Euros, with 12 billion Euros of those funds to be disbursed early next month. The Greek parliament will have to vote this week on whether or not to accept the package, which contains another round of punishing austerity measures as conditions for the funds.

Earth4Energy provides instructions for the average homeowner to build and install their own energy systems. Alternative energy is an appealing idea to most but too expensive for the average homeowner. Sure, there are tax breaks for alternative energy but who can afford the high cost in lieu of the money saved on taxes? There are ways to get to the source without breaking the bank, so to speak.

Is it possible to generate your own power and reduce your electric bill? Yes, it is not only possible but affordable as well. With energy costs on the rise and global warming threatening, now is the time to stop paying those high energy bills by starting to generate our own electricity.

A one stop solution for eliminating or reducing your energy costs is Earth4Energy. Why would you pay thousands of dollars for solar or wind generated systems when it’s possible to build your own for less than $200. Earth4Energy supplies complete solar and wind guides that teach you everything you need to know. The full illustrated guide manuals offer step by step directions and easy to follow videos for creating your own renewable energy right at your own home.

Current markets sell solar and wind systems for much much more than you will spend by following these simple do it yourself guides. Fantastic energy savings results can be acquired at a fraction of the cost. Once you learn to build and install your alternative solar or wind energy system you will save hundreds of dollars on your electric bill. Building a huge wind turbine isn’t necessary as you will see in the instructions of the Earth4Energy manuals. Effective results doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money.

For those looking for an alternative energy generating system to reduce energy costs, Earth4Energy is the best system there is. It is simplified instructions through use of explicit manuals and videos. Having access to alternative energy is now made available to those who once thought they could not afford it. Dropping your energy costs by 50-80% is likely using the Earth4Energy kit. Information is also shared as to where you can obtain free batteries to power your system. These batteries store the energy making it a portable energy source. Moving them anywhere for any use is possible.

Benefits of an Earth4Energy System

I recently came across a location with more than 16,000 downloadable woodworking designs at: http://www.TedsWoodworking.com.

Here is my sincere assessment of Teds Woodworking Projects

Benefits:

If you choose to start a woodworking project, you need all the essential information, together with schematics, blueprints, resources lists, dimensions and so forth. That is where Teds Woodworking comes in the sphere of. The designs are plainly drawn and they are step-by-step explanations of how all the component parts go all together.

Presently, there are several other sites whose collection of design plans enclose the dimensions completely incorrect lacking any indication of parts lists, material lists or else the tools considered necessary. If you’re one of individuals persons who have bought designs like this in the earlier, Teds Woodworking Projects will alter your perception.

Appearing in Ted’s Woodworking you will understand and have everything you need.

Diagrams which are specific with a jam-packed collection of dimensions

Step -by-step directions how to start your project

The essential resources for that special project

All the woodworking tools you will need to finish the project

If you are a novice or have completed various woodworking you will discover these plans are easy-to-follow since the instructions are very unmistakably clearly written. The woodworking designs are simple and comprehensible so they are not difficult at all. Even if you are a complete newcomer to woodworking you will simply be able to master all the techniques that are considered necessary and the woodworking skills very quickly by following the concise and obvious directions.

An additional detail which is so impressive in relation to these woodworking plans is that there have been several videos included and there are some to show you in how to build benches, home furniture, dog houses, bird feeders, sheds and much much more.

There is in addition a member lifetime access included within the package and you pick up these extras at no cost to you because they are complimentary with no added charges at all! This alone is worth the full fee for Teds Woodworking.

Ted Mcgrath is a very devoted and knowledgeable woodworker who knows what he is talking regarding when it comes to woodworking and DIY projects s he has been a woodworker for many years.

Drawbacks

Presently there is simply one drawback that we can observe and that being with 16,000 woodworking designs you are bound to obtain some which look somewhat inadequately organized but that is logical as it is very difficult to place all these plans into their proper categories. Secondly, it might take you a little longer to sort out the downloads because of the size of them. The members area includes a selection to upgrade to the DVD so you can save time on downloading.

Conclusion:

Fact is, I’ve been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven’t found anything like this for a smaller amount than tens of thousands of dollars. Here’s the kicker: If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn’t something you should take advantage of, it’s something that you would be irresponsible not to. Yes, Ted’s Woodworking Projects is that good.

Self-sufficiency by classification is often a situation where anyone can easily self-sustain without using external resources. If you take that assertion literally, it’s almost impossible to acquire. The majority of every living person in the world is actually relying upon some outside resources in order to survive. For instance, just about all living things will need food to exist; most living things, with the exception of humans, our pets and the animals raised for our food, search and collect food as they have for hundreds or even millions of years ago. The birds, deer and other wild animals forage to sustain and through natural selection, only the strongest have survived. The majority of humans however, count on other people to produce food. We are no longer hunters and gatherers, but alternatively consumers. Most people acquire their own food through purchase as opposed to foraging or growing what they eat. What would our present day of life be like without the grocery store? Of course, purchasing foods implies that we should have money. And in order to have money, most of us have to have a job. Therefore begins the limited repeated cycle which has become our lifestyle and we have abandoned the basic principals of survival on our own. We truly are born slaves to the present day monetary system whether we want to believe it or not.

Apart from food, we need other necessities as well; water, protection and warmth. Again, many people nowadays rely on outside resources to offer these things. People obtain water from a faucet, conveniently piped to us by utility companies, live in a mortgaged residence or rental apartment and also count on warmth through an electric or perhaps gasoline energy utility business. What exactly will becoming self-sufficient suggest in the current society? A society riddled with unrest, uncertainty and natural disasters occurring a rapid pace. Unemployment means no money for the basics and disparity is rampant. Getting back to basics and alternative energy may be the only choice we have to assure our family’s well being.

We can become self-sustaining by using our own mental and physical abilities to grow food and assure protection and warmth so that you can maintain your existence. It means not really relying on other people for things that that can be done yourself. It is a life-style in which decreases our dependency on external resources to be able to live. Self-sufficiency for many folks means restarting the relevant skills once popular by earlier generations: planting, growing and harvesting food, making and also fixing tools and equipment, cutting and also drying fire wood, sewing or creating garments and also building a home or maybe a barn. Installing alternative energy sources, hand-pumps on wells, raising chickens for eggs, rabbits to eat and hunting skills are all steps we can take to developing a more self-sustainable lifestyle.

This is by no means a straightforward feat. It requires much self-denial along with a determination not within most people. Especially in the current culture in which through the years we’ve grown accustomed to conveniences and reliance on others to provide for our basic needs. As science makes our existence “easier”, we grow further and further from the once valuable information that everyone had to know in order to survive.

What’s gained through self-sufficiency? A larger sense of resilience as well as a greater power over a person’s reality. You will also become more healthy knowing what went directly into growing as well as preparation of your own personal food. You’ll minimize your dependency on money requiring less demand on you to work just to pay the existing bills. Rather than pay a repairman to fix something, you take satisfaction in repairing it your self. Rather than giving hundreds monthly to an electric company, you might actually get the electric company to pay you. You rest easy knowing that whatever natural disaster happens or in case of an economic collapse you and yours will survive.
